Bottling it up

We went on a site visit today, in the search for a concept. We recorded every observation made, taking photos of anything we thought we could draw any form of concept from.

On our way there we witnessed a rather unusual encounter that sparked our ideas. An old man was sitting on a bench struggling to open the lid of a bottle in a brown paper bag. Being 10am this would have been slightly out of the ordinary itself.

After many unsuccessful attempts at opening the bottle he leant over to a teenage boy sitting at the other end of the bench, asking for his help. The boy opened the bottle then proceeded to start a conversation with the old man as they shared the bottle between them.

We also noticed that there were many discarded bottles on the streets around laneways, pubs and bars.

We decided to create an installation that comments on the drinking culture of the area, and how it bring together people from a vast array of backgrounds.

The Search for a Concept

Being in a group with four visual communications students and a Fashion Student, we started to lean towards graphic based installations (live painting etc).


After bringing in pages of inspiration and ideas we decided to return back to Foley St to find a concept that would reflect the area and would utilise all of our skills.

Pieces of String

Faced with the task of creating a an exhibition piece for a pop up gallery in Foley Street, our class began to map the area with pieces of string in hope of finding inspiration.


Our group was drawn to the geometric shapes of the street, and the milk crates that dotted the gutter. Our piece commented on the space and construction of the street.
